Eastern and Oriental Restaurant Review

1885 Eastern and Oriental (E&O), George Town, Penang, Malaysia

The historical Eastern and Oriental Hotel in George Town in Penang has several restaurants, such as Sarkies Corner, The Bakery, Farquar’s Bar, the Veranda, the Deck, and the place where we ate, 1885. The 1885 restaurant name is after the year that the hotel was established, and is the fanciest of the eateries at the hotel. We enjoyed a traditional English Afternoon Tea served in an elegant setting. We each had a different tea (served as tea bags): Fitness tea (which was a herbal tea) and Asam Mokalbarie tea (a rich full bodied broken tea with a lively aroma of malt and spices). Served with the tea was white bread finger sandwiches (no crust) with cucumber, smoked salmon, pork and pickles. There were also fruit and plain scones, served with jam and cream, and 10 tiny sweet portions – shortbread, fruitcake with strawberry and a mini croquenbush. It was way too decadent and posh for us – but great!

Other Things You Should Know

  • there is no dress code, but you may want to dress up for the high tea service to feel the part
  • open for afternoon tea 2.30pm to 5pm

Jewel of the North Review

Jewel of the North, Batu Ferringhi, Penang Malaysia

Possibly serving up the best North Indian cuisine on the island of Penang, the Jewel of the North opened its doors in 1993 as one of the original restaurants in the area. Although the restaurant  specializes in North Indian cuisine, they have a variety of international dishes too. In actual fact we came here for breakfast and there was not an Indian meal in sight. We were disappointed with the cost, it is a bit expensive but that is what you pay for the nicer places to eat compared to the hawker stalls nearby. There is an open kitchen which lets you see your food being cooked right in front of you, so you can see it comes out fresh.

Other Things You Should Know

  • it is located at the other end of the road, towards Teluk Bahang, near Golden Sands Resort
  • open for breakfast, lunch or dinner, 7 days a week from 7am – 11pm.

Karaikudi Restaurant Review

Karaikudi Restaurant, Little India, George Town, Penang, Malaysia

Located in the famous Little India area in Penang, serving north and south Indian cuisine. This air conditioned restaurant will be a welcome relief from the heat of the streets of Penang. The waiters were very friendly (it helped when there were more wait staff than customers!) and helped us choose from the menu. It was an amazing meal, delicious and filling. We ordered too much, but as it was cheap it was great to try a large selection of food. We had the following: mango lassi, papadums with mint sauce (complimentary), egg biryani, chicken tikka (flame grilled charcoal flavor with yoghurt marinade), fish marsala (spicy and delicious), plain naan bread, kulcher paneer (cheese stuffed flatbread) and a cauliflower curry.

Tree Monkey at the Tropical Spice Garden Review

monkey-treeTree Monkey @ the Tropical Spice Garden, Penang Malaysia

The Tree Monkey Restaurant is located in the grounds of the Tropical Spice Garden, just north of Batu Ferringhi on the Malaysian Island of Penang. The restaurant is perched on the hill with the outdoor seating area overlooking the Andaman Sea. We stopped for a snack after exploring the spice garden, and could not go past trying the dish that is pictured. I cannot remember what it was called, but you had a plate of some unusual ingredients including lime, nuts and chilli, which you rolled up in a leaf and ate. It was a fantastic mouth sensation. Also on the spice theme, we each had a spiced coffee. yummo.

Other Things You Should Know

  • make sure you take time to explore the Tropical Spice Garden too.
  • open 9am – 11pm (Sunday – Thursday) & 9am – midnight (Friday & Saturday).
