Foam Coffee Bar, Leederville

FoamFoam in Leederville remains a popular spot in this ever-evolving suburb. It must be doing well as it has expanded into the neighbouring space, and onto the footpath in front. Their website says it is Swedish-inspired. I haven’t been to Sweden so I’m not sure what parts are Swedish-inspired. Maybe it is the deer head on the wall, or maybe they copied a few menu items from Miss Mauds.

I went only for coffee, but the place was busy feeding a big crowd breakfast off the menu or from the selection of baked goods on display. I dropped in on the day of a street festival, and disappointingly they were only serving hot drinks in takeaway cups (I assumed they did not usually do this). It just doesn’t taste the same.

The Bodhi Tree and Bookstore, Mount Hawthorn

The Bodhi Tree Cafe in Mount Hawthorn

Is it a bookshop or cafe? I pick bookshop. There wasn’t even a menu. That does not mean it is not a good place to go for a drink and catchup, quite the opposite. It is nice to find somewhere a bit different, with a bit of character. I enjoyed the eclectic mix of tables and chairs placed among the bookshelves, and mugs that seem like they were bought from the op shop across the road.

The Bodhi Tree Cafe in Mount Hawthorn

I find it hard to distinguish the very good from the excellent coffee. Any cafe that has return customers must satisfy many of them.

The Bodhi Tree Cafe in Mount HawthornIn these places I never know if I can have a look at the books on the shelves while enjoying a coffee, it is very tempting, but may be frowned upon. I went with my four-year-old, who I had to hold back from helping himself to the shelves of books.

Where is it?

Ichiban Japanese Delight, Victoria Park

International Eating House

The Ichiban Japanese Delight food outlet is located inside the International Eating House in Victoria Park, WA. We were attracted to this place as we love international eating, and the food hall set-up was perfect for our family, offering a large selection of food. Unfortunately, the place has seen better days. More than half of the food outlets were empty, and the whole place had a dodgy feel about it.

Novotel Sen5es Buffet Breakfast

We love a buffet breakfast, and we could not miss the chance to go to the Sen5es restaurant at the Novotel Perth Langley. We went on a Sunday morning, and were lucky to have booked as it was packed full of mostly visiting groups.

There were a couple of food stations, which contains the usual hot western breakfast foods such as eggs, bacon, cooked tomato, hash brown, sausages, mushrooms. At least the staples were there.

Novotel Langley Perth

It is the more unusual items that make a special buffet breakfast. Some of the things that you don’t always find at a buffet breakfast included Chinese steamed pork buns, smoked salmon, stir fried noodles, which were all a great addition.

There were a good variety of juices including carrot and tomato. You could make your own coffee, but why would you when you could order an espresso coffee from the barista.

There was a large choice of breads, including a freshly baked crusty loaf which was so popular they could not keep up supply. It could have been better if a grainy bread was on offer. There was also a good mix of cakes and pastries.

The place is quite family friendly. The place was pretty noisy, so the extra noise that kids can somtimes make was not noticeable. Our kids were able to help themselves to most of the food items. The staff were very friendly.

Novotel Langley Perth

On the negative side, we noticed they were quite slow to clean up plates, a few things ran out and were slow to be refreshed.

We came only because we had a Groupon voucher, and it was quire busy for a Saturday morning, probably due to their recent Groupon promotion. The voucher made it a very economical outing, but we enjoyed it so much we would consider coming back again and paying full price.

Jamie’s Italian in Perth Review

Jamie’s Italian Restaurant in Perth had been on our wish list for quite a while, and as we walked past one night we decided to see if we could score a table.

It was ‘only’ a 1.5 hour wait. With a very efficient booking system, we visited a nearby pub and waited for their call when a table was ready. Alternatively you can have a drink at the bar within the restaurant.

The place was buzzing, or you could describe it as crowded and noisy. They have certainly maximised their floor space, so we felt quite cramped on our small table for two, squeezed in between two other tables with a very narrow walkway.

The decore was a little eclectic, with a high industrial roof with exposed air-conditioning tunnelling, with an enormous fancy chandelier hanging. The bathrooms were slightly retro with cool coloured tiling.

They have a huge team of greeters and seaters, order takers and food deliverers. They were all very efficient and always polite.

It was an interesting menu, not just the standard Italian items, although they were all still their. Some great salads, a burger, some share ‘planks’ with meat, seafood or vegetarian were some of the more interesting options

First course was crunchy arancini balls. These had a fabulous taste, with garlic, lemon and a touch of chilli, but were super crunchy as though they had spent a little too long in the deep fryer!

Main course of deliciously tender baked salmon, with a crunchy salad and olive oil dressing, and some roast veggies.

The main course of fennel sausage pasta, was a classic Italian tomato based sauce with some sausage meat for flavour. Great al’dente in-house pasta.

The baked cheesecake was a great finish to the meal. It came with a candied orange sauce which was extremely sweet, but none-the-less rather scrumptious!

The price of the meals were surprisingly very reasole, though it did add up with a bottle of wine, an entrée, two mains and a dessert.

Caffissimo at the Gallery Review

Caffissimo at the Gallery, Northbridge

After visiting the new exhibition at the WA Art Gallery, we decided to try the cafe out front. It seemed like a nice place to sit and snack while watching people go by. There is no table service, you have to invariably line up for a while. The special soup that I ordered had just run out, so I chose another. It was a surprise when the original soup was served. That was good for us but a little confusing. The half size ‘soup and sarnie’ was a great idea, a bit like a sample plate.  I never like to spend too much on the kids who often don’t appreciate it and don’t finish it, so I went for a short walk to Trackside Bakery went and got some extra snacks. Overall the food was OK, satisfying, but nothing exceptional. I hear that the coffee is good.

Guzman y Gomez Review

Guzman y Gomez, Northbridge

Great new Mexican restaurant in Perth. Take my advice, try the spicy chicken guerrero burrito – grilled chicken (grilled in their special marinade) with pico de gallo and tomatillo salsa, rice, black beans and cheddar cheese, packed into a flour tortilla. I have not had a burrito as good as this since San Francisco. There are lots of options, you can pick a style (burrito/taco/quesadilla/nachos and then choose a filling (chicken/steak/beef/pork/fish or veggie). All the food is good really, fairly authentic Mexican fare as far as I can tell. Very casual and kids friendly, highly recommended.

Jaws Sushi Train Review

sushiJaws Sushi Restuarant, Perth City

This place is always busy, so the sushi keeps coming freshly made. This Jaws Sushi Restaurant is located in the Hay Street Mall in Perth, Western Australia, and has been around for a long time. It can get very busy with the lunch time work crowd, so avoid the rush hour if you can. There are not a lot of sushi train restaurants around Perth so if you want that experience it is a good place to go. The mostly Japanese staff are happy and friendly. They offer what you expect for such a restaurant, with plates ranging from $3.10 to $6.80. There are a couple of other places in the Jaws chain around town that you should also check out – East Perth, Forrest Chase and London Court.

Perth City Farm Cafe Review

perth-city-farmCity Farm Cafe, Perth Western Australia

Fresh, Bright, Fun and Good for You. The Perth City Farm has been around for a while, though the cafe on site has only recently been added. The cafe is run by volunteers, but you woul dnot know that by the quality of the menu. There is a focus on fresh food, all prepared daily, and I guess without the staff costs they can keep the price to a reasonable level. We went for lunch one weekend, and the kofta burgers on turkish bread were one of the best burgers we have had for a long time
