Asian Cuisine Restaurant Review

We were looking for a nice good value meal on a Sunday night, and were directed to Collins Street Willeton by a local who said there were a few Chinese restaurants located along there. To our surprise there was a restaurant hub with a packed car park, and lines outside some of the restaurants. We checked out the menus at a few of them, and settled on Asian Cuisine, a interesting choice of name but definitely no confusion about the type of food they serve.

It was the cheapest of the restaurants in the area, but that was not the only reason we chose it. It was also busy and although the menu was not as extensive as others it had a few things that were very appealing to us.

The staff in this small restaurant were very friendly, with many of the other patrons clearly regulars.

Clare had not had many good laksas lately, but had a good feeling she would get a good authentic one here. She was not disappointed, as it was tasty, spicy and packed with seafood and bean sprouts.

Rob was drawn to the section on the menu for claypot meals, and eventually chose the salted fish, chicken and Chinese sausage dish. The description reminded him off a similar dish he had earlier this year in Singapore. He was so eager to dig in he burnt his tongue on the first mouthful of rice. The claypot sure keeps the heat in. There were generous portions of boneless chicken over the top, mixed with small amounts of sausage, and barely recognisable bits of salted fish, adding just the right amount of saltiness. These pots can hold quite a bit of food, and the normally insatiable Rob was unable to finish it all.

If we come back to the area we would definitely check out these restaurants again, and it would be tempting to go back to Asian Cuisine.

Regal on Roe Chinese Restaurant Review

Regal on Roe, Northbridge

We had heard that Regal on Roe was the best value dim sum in Perth, and we were looking to try somewhere new after the last time visiting Dragon Palace nearby in Northbridge. Very good first impression, a welcoming feel and not too big. We were offered Chinese tea as we sat down. The service was excellent, friendly and English well spoken. There was plenty of food on offer, which you do not always get. We had arrived early for lunch, which may have helped as the place was not full. There were the usual dim sum options, we did not have a bad serve. The radish cakes were a bit bland, but that was about the only criticism. It was a good outing with the kids – they like plenty of the dim sum offerings, and the watermelon juice and jelly were great bonuses. They also enjoyed watching the live lobster in the tank. We can’t vouch for it being the best value dim sum in Perth, as we thought it was quite expensive. It may have just been that the food looked so good that we ordered more than we would normally. Next time we may try the Chinese place next door. There are plenty of Chinese options in Northbridge we have yet to try.

Ritouhuo (Yangshuo, China) Review

Ritouhuo Restaurant, Yangshuo China

Ritouhuo is a chain-like Chinese restaurant which attracted us as it was cheap, looked clean, with an English menu and images. It was not going to be as easy as we thought.

After some assistance from a friendly stranger who helped me not order pig intestines, I ordered 4 different dishes. One dish was the noodles that the girl next to us was eating, which tasted like char kway teo, some bbq pork and duck with rice which was really tasty, a tofu dish which came with a side of bok choy and rice, a large bamboo bowl with rice topped with Chinese sausage and bbq pork. All meals were served with seaweed soup. You can also order the local specialty, Guilin Rice Noodles.

We saw a group of guys at the table next to us drinking from red cans, which maybe be beer, or even bourbon and coke? It ended up being iced tea! It was nice anyway.

A day out in Yangshuo, China

Overall a very good meal, but the service was interesting. After ordering, you pay, get a docket, take it to the food serving area, and demand and hassle the staff for your meal! This is quite a challenge when you can’t speak Chinese, because I am sure everyone got served before me. An interesting experience.

Dragon Palace Review

Dragon Palace, Northbridge

This place has been around a long time on James Street, and if you go past on any weekend you will see lines of people streaming in – always an indication of the popularity of the place. With all those people to cater for, there is a huge dining area and they move them in and out pretty quickly. There is a large range of the usual dim sum options and the quality is good.

Dragon View Restaurant Review

Dragon View Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur

We only went here as it was pouring rain and we jumped out of a taxi and walked straight into this restaurant. It is located conveniently at the end of the restaurant strip on Jalan Alor. This place looked inviting and clean, is busy, but the food is nothing special and the service wooden. The food is overpriced, you are much better off heading just next door or any one of the many places along the road actually. On the menu is a mix of Chinese/Cantonese dishes, Malay dishes and other Asian styles.

On arrival there is a small bowl of peanuts on the table, presumably complimentary. You wont find out that they are not until you get the bill and find you have been charged RM3 if you have eaten them. You are not told there is a charge for the peanuts, so be wary.

Other Things You Should Know

  • the restaurant is located on the corner of Jalan Alor and Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang, underneath the View Hotel

Ocean Dragon Chinese Restaurant Review

Ocean Dragon Chinese Restaurant in Waterman

Rarely do you find such a good view from a Chinese Restaurant. This place is located above the Fig Cafe and across the road from the beach, and from the second story window there are great views along the coast. Make sure you come early enough to take advantage of the great views. There is a large selection on the menu, the food is pretty good for Chinese, and the prices reasonable too.

Malaysia Garden Chinese Restaurant Review

Malaysia Garden Chinese Restaurant in Willetton

Don’t go here expecting purely ‘Malaysian food’, which is a misnomer anyway, as food in Malaysia is derived from Chinese, Indian, Malay, Thai plus many other influences. Also don’t go here expecting a gourmet food experience. What you do get is friendly service, large serves and good food. This restaurant has recently moved from Riverton Forum, the food and staff are the same.

Other Things You Should Know

  • BYO. There is a bottle shop just next door

Anna Vietnamese Restaurant

Anna Vietnamese RestaurantIt is an institution in Leederville, and it shows. Anna Vietnamese Restaurant is a casual eatery, quite old school but popular with locals. It can get busy at times, and is suitable to bring the kids or come along in a group. The menu is quite long, though contains mostly standard Asian restaurant fare – don’t expect any ‘pho’. There is nothing surprising on the menu, but if you choose wisely or go often enough you will find something satisfying. The restaurant is BYO, with two handy bottle shops in just down the road in Leederville.

Our Experience

At a recent visit Clare ordered one of the specials from the board, Cinnamon Chicken, which was chicken on the bone, which we did not expect. It smelt and tasted great though. The serving sizes were good, with three dishes ordered for two adults and one child we had extra took home extra. Overall the food was OK and we may go there again if looking for a cheap night out.
