Babi Kecap recipe

Babi Kecap, which means pork in sweet sauce, is another of our favourite Balinese meals. Pork is common in Bali, but not in Indonesia being a muslim country who don’t eat pork. The flavour is based on the famous Indonesian sauce Kecap Manis – sweet soy sauce, which gives a lovely sticky sweet but savoury dish. This is a modified recipe of my own liking. Try it and see if you like it too.

Ingredients:

  • 500g pork (the fatty cuts are often used but I like to use a trim version)
  • 5 shallots, finely sliced
  • 2-4 garlic cloves, crushed and sliced
  • 3cm fresh ginger root, finley chopped
  • 30g dark sugar (palm sugar if you can source it) (less if you don’t want it too sweet or if using regular white sugar as this is more sweet)
  • 1/2 cup kecap manis
  • 2 cups of water
  • lemon juice
  • flour
  • Vegetables like mushroom, capsicum, and green beans all go well with this dish.

Method:

  1. Coat the diced pork with the flour. Fry in a little oil in a shallow fry pan until browned. Remove from pan on paper towel
  2. Fry onions, garlic and ginger in a little oil until soft, then add back the cooked pork meat.
  3. Add in the Kecap Manis, sugar and water, bring to the boil, then turn down the heat to simmer.
  4. If adding vegetables it depends on the individual vegetables cooking time. I add mushroom at the beginning as they hold well on cooking, and capsicum in the last 5-7 minutes, green beans in the last 2-3 minutes. Or to your liking.
  5. Simmer for 30 minutes or until the sauce has thickened
  6. Add lemon juice and pepper right at the end
  7. Serve with steamed white, red or brown rice

Some recipes add in grated nutmeg, the locals do this too. I find it hard to source, although if you had nutmeg powder this might do the trick, however I hardly notice the difference with or without!

Warung Bakso Jamur Ubud

Warung Bakso Jamur UbudThe Warung Bakso Jamur is another new restaurant, located in Nyuh Kuning, on Jln Raya Nyuh Kuning not far from the Bali Cultural Centre (BCC).

As the restaurant name implies, their speciality is mushroom soup, and that is pretty much all you can get. The food is very delicious, and the place clean and cheap. If you are after a bowl of bakso, this is a good option rather than the roadside setups that may not have as good a hygiene standard.

Warung Bakso Jamur Ubud

The restaurant is run by some local disabled people, and you eating here helps to support their group. They also have some products available to purchase which can also help support them.

Ayam Ayam Ubud

Ayam Ayam Ubud BaliAs the name suggests, the Ayam Ayam restaurant in Ubud specialises in chicken dishes. It is located at Jl. Hanoman No.73, just opposite Cocos Supermarket.

The restaurant opened in 2014, and I visited just after it had opened. The dish that stood out to me was the fried rice with zucchini and pineapple. It was great to see a variation from the standard Nasi Goreng from most menus.

The potato wedges were also the most impressive we have seen in Bali

Pica South American Kitchen, Ubud

Review of Pica South American Kitchen

PICA South American Ubud BaliThis restaurant has been talked up for its quality food, and it didn’t disappoint. The dish above was a corn polenta with mushrooms, and it was amazing. Not quite what I was expecting, but much better! It was a baked dish, so it took some time to serve, but was absolutely worth it in the end, the texture was creamy, and the flavours even better.

PICA South American Ubud Bali

The empanadas, were also really tasty. Deep fried with a fabulous flavourful filling. It was served with a lovely salsa which matched the flavours nicely. From memory I also think we got some complimentary bread on arrival, home baked and tasty verde salsa and butter as sides.

PICA South American Ubud Bali

Ceviche, a classic south american raw fish dish. The flavours in this really hit you at first. It came as a cold soup, served with nice bread to soak it all up. Some tender fish (I forget the type), crunchy corn and red onion) and a super tangy (its made with lime juice) soup. You won’t forget this flavour any time soon, it works so well.

PICA South American Ubud Bali

The setting is nice, it is located on Jalan Dewi Sita opening onto the busy street. There are only a few tables, so get in early or book a table to reserve your spot. The night we went it was very busy, and that was early days. The owner/chef was also very hospitable coming out to the tables to greet and talk to customers, a very nice touch.

Tempe Manis Recipe

Bread Life, Ubud

Bread Life Bakery Ubud BaliWe love bread life!

It is a chain bakery coming out of Japan, and first opened up in Jakarta, and now Indonesia has a love affair with it!  It’s bright and light, with an amazing array of different bread products. From loaves of bread, to savoury options, as well as sweet treats, even full blown cakes on sale. When I first tried it I wasn’t that impressed, as the style is those classic sweet bread bakery items that are popular all over Asia, which I can;t say I was ever a huge fan. But with the wide choice on offer there is always something you’ll like, and the kids love it – even better!

Bread Life Bakery Ubud Bali

The system works well, you grab a tray, some tongs and help yourself to whatever  takes your fancy. Take the tray to the cashier, and pay, either eat-in or take-away. Super cheap and super quick. There are even some deep fired goodness options, with sausage. But our all time family favourite is the Rugby Ball!!  Once you’ve tried it you’ll love it!

They also serve drinks, coffee, and frozen slushy style drinks, and ice-cream. Nice and refreshing for the hot weather.

The Elephant Review, Ubud

The Elephant Ubud

The Elephant is located on Jalan Raya Sanggingan, in front of Hotel Taman Indrakila, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. It is a vegetarian restaurant, but don’t let that put you off, as the menu is very interesting. The place has a really nice feel to it, with an outlook to die for, literally if you lean over too far… its long way down.

The Elephant Ubud

The ain options are salad bowls, with an amazing array of different combinations of delicious sounding salad mixes. It was a difficult decision to make. It wasn’t disappointing either, coming in a very good serve size with a scrumptious dressing.  The image below was not the salad, but the pasta dish we also ordered, of which we can’t really remember much about it, except that it tasted great! Sorry.

The Elephant Ubud

The view..much better during the day time, as you can see more, but this evening shot gives you an idea of the scenery. You oversea the champuan ridge, which is a lovely walk through the greenery just outside of Ubud town.

Warung Little India Review, Ubud

Warung Little India Restaurant UbudSiti’s Warung Little India is hidden away on Jl Sukma. For those in the know, here you can find authentic home cooked Indian food.

We decided to sit out front under the gorgeous fairly lights, however there is also seating inside which seems very attractive in an Indian style.

Warung Little India Restaurant Ubud

Warung Little India Restaurant UbudWe could not go here without trying Ibu Siti’s famous samosas. They are vegetarian potato samosas with mint and tamarind chutneys. These were just perfectly balanced in flavour, and the sauce was a lovely accompaniment.

Warung Little India Restaurant UbudThe best way to sample an Indian restaurant is to have a Thali, which is a set meal including samosas, dal, cucumber raita, rice and naan  bread, Indian pickle, chutney, with a veg and non-veg main. Served in a Balinese style on a banana leaf with a tower of rice, all the elements were really good.

Warung Little India Restaurant UbudWe also ordered an eggplant dip with naan, and it looks like Clare is enjoying this. Got to love a bit of eggplant cooked to perfection with some robust Indian spices. Hmmhmm.

Warung Little India Restaurant Ubud

This place is small but ambient, and the food is of a high standard, without the typical high prices of many Indian restaurants. Worth trying.

Hujan Locale Restaurant Review

Taco Casa Ubud

Taco Casa UbudTaco Casa is the best Mexican restaurant in Ubud, possibly even in Bali (only in comparison to a few others), but there are limited options here for Mexican and this is a great restaurant!

It is located on Jalan Pengosekan, right on the bend going into town. There is a small amount of parking out the front, otherwise there is a laneway with ample parking across the road and 20m further from town.

The restaurant is efficiently run, with loads of attentive and friendly staff, and a great system in the kitchen that works well, as you always get your food in a timely manner. On top of all that the food is delicious.

Above is the salad bowl, which has an amazing mix of delicious Mexican ingredients, like avocado, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, capsicum, your choice of meat, and a fabulous dressing, served in a crunchy crispy baked tortilla – which you can eat. There is another salad worth mentioning, the Fiesta, which has similar ingredients, (slightly different) and comes in a regular bowl with a few corn chips in it. That one is my favourite. Below is delight for the kids, MYO taco’s. Choose your ingredients off the list, then they all come separate for you to make yourself, the kids love it and they can choose what goes in them, so much fun! The shells and corn chips are all home made, and are really rustic and good.

Taco Casa Ubud

The other favourite dish (Rob’s) is the burrito. A giant soft flour tortilla encasing some meat (of your choice), rice, beans, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, and maybe some other bits, with sauce. Spicy or not! Yummbo!

Taco Casa Ubud

The kids other popular meal is the quesadilla, or the flat bread toasted sandwich I like to call it. several different fillings, served with guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. Always gobbled up quickly.

Taco Casa Ubud

This place is a really fresh tasty Mexican restaurant, not the typical cheesy oily mass produced fare you sometimes get with Mexican. And all at a reasonable price. Gotta love it. I’m salivating thinking about it now!
